Back to Basics: DOT Date Codes and Tire Aging
A customer drives off the lot on four tires with plenty of tread, feels good about the purchase, and has no idea that two of those tires were sitting in a warehouse for four years before they ever touched pavement. Nothing about that transaction was dishonest — but nothing about it was disclosed, either. And that's the gap this article is about.
Every tire has a date stamped on it that tells you exactly when it was built. Almost no customer knows to look for it, and plenty of counter staff never check it either. That's a problem, because tread depth isn't the only thing that determines whether a tire is safe to sell — age matters just as much, sometimes more.
How to Read the Code
Every tire sold in the U.S. carries a DOT (Department of Transportation) identification number molded into the sidewall. The last four digits of that number are the date code — two digits for the week, two for the year. A tire stamped "2324" was manufactured in the 23rd week of 2024. That's it. No decoding software, no lookup tool required — just knowing where to look and what the last four digits mean.
The code is usually on one sidewall only, sometimes the inner sidewall facing the vehicle, which is exactly why it gets missed. If you're not checking both sides during mount, you can miss it entirely.
Why a "New" Tire Can Still Be Too Old
Here's the part that surprises most customers: rubber degrades over time regardless of mileage. A tire sitting in a warehouse, on a shelf, or even mounted on a vehicle that rarely moves is aging the same way a tire in daily use is — through oxidation and the slow breakdown of the compound, not through tread wear. A tire with 2/32" of wear and a tire that's never touched a road can both be equally past their safe service life if enough time has passed.
Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires somewhere between six and ten years from the manufacture date, regardless of remaining tread. Some vehicle manufacturers set that threshold even earlier. There's no single universal cutoff, but the principle is consistent: age is its own countdown, separate from wear.
This matters most on:
- Spare tires, which can sit unused for a decade and get overlooked entirely.
- Trailer and RV tires, which often see low mileage but long calendar time between uses.
- Slow-moving inventory, especially specialty sizes that don't turn over quickly on a shop's own shelves.
- Seasonal sets stored between uses, where a customer assumes "barely driven" means "still good."
The Liability Side
Selling a tire that's already near or past the recommended service window, without saying anything about it, creates the same kind of exposure as mismatching a speed rating or ignoring a load rating. If that tire fails and the date code comes up in a claim or a lawsuit, "we didn't check" is not a place any shop wants to be standing.
This cuts both ways. It's not just about what leaves through the front door — it's about what's sitting in the shop's own inventory. A tire that's been on the rack for years before it's ever sold carries the same risk as one pulled from a customer's aging spare. Rotating stock and checking date codes on slower-moving sizes isn't just good practice, it's part of managing that same exposure from the other direction.
Here's How We Built This Into the Mount Process
A shop we worked with had a habit that had crept in over the years without anyone deciding it on purpose: techs checked date codes on takeoffs when something looked obviously old, but not as a standard step on every mount. It wasn't neglect — it just hadn't been built into the process as a required check, so it depended on who was on the rack that day.
The fix was simple and took almost no extra time. Date code verification got added as a required line on the pre-mount inspection, right next to tread depth and visible damage. Techs started calling it out on every job, new tires and takeoffs both, and advisors started noting it on the ticket the same way they'd note a tread measurement.
The upside showed up in two places. First, it caught a batch of older inventory that had been sitting longer than anyone realized, which got flagged and moved before it became a problem. Second, it gave advisors a new, low-pressure way to add value on inspections — checking a customer's spare or a trailer tire's date code as part of a routine visit, and having a real, specific reason to bring up replacement instead of a vague "it looks old." Customers responded well to a concrete number over a guess, and it turned a handful of routine inspections into unplanned sales that felt like a genuine catch, not a pitch.
How to Talk to a Customer About Tire Age
This conversation can feel awkward if it's framed as "your tire is bad," especially when the tread looks fine. It goes over much better framed as information, not a verdict:
"Your tread's actually in decent shape, but I want to point something out — this tire was manufactured back in [year], which puts it past what most manufacturers recommend for replacement regardless of tread. It's not falling apart today, but it's worth planning for sooner rather than later."
That framing respects the customer's ability to make their own call, while making sure they're making it with full information — the same principle that applies to every disclosure conversation in this series.
What to Avoid
Don't use date codes as a pure scare tactic to force an immediate sale on a tire that's genuinely fine. The goal is disclosure and planning, not manufacturing urgency where none exists. A tire two years past a soft six-year guideline with good tread and no visible cracking is a different conversation than a spare that's twelve years old and has never been checked. Treat the date code as one data point among several — tread depth, visible cracking, storage conditions — not as an automatic replacement trigger on its own.
The Bottom Line
Date codes are one of the easiest checks in the shop to build into a routine, and one of the easiest to skip if it's not a required step. Shops that treat age as seriously as they treat tread depth catch problems before they become liability, protect their own inventory from the same risk, and give advisors one more honest, specific reason to build trust with a customer instead of just moving product.
